The latest piece of kit to hit the Results studio are sandbells which can be described as pancake shaped bags filled with sand. Unlike traditional sandbags/powerbags the sandbells have no actual handles to grip so instead you have to hold the wet suit like material instead when performing lifts, slams, throws etc. This makes for a completely different feel and training effect compared to such things as dumbbells, kettlebells and sandbags. Working with the bags will really test your grip and arm strength not only from holding onto the material but also from the constantly shifting load as the sand inside moves about. All of this will result in a tough workout for your core and stabilising muscles and you may discover aches in places you didn’t know you had muscles! Other benefits of using the bells over more traditional equipment includes the ability to slam them around as unlike medicine balls there is no danger of them bouncing up. They are also very hard wearing so you won’t find piles of sand on your gym floor after a vigorous session of slamming, which is not always the case with some other types of sandbags which have not stood up to the task. They are also great for throwing drills which can really help to improve explosive power, whether it is to help with a particular sport or just to spice up a PT session and give your clients something different and fun to try. There is something quite satisfying about throwing and slamming sandbells around! Below is a short video showing just a few of the many drills and exercises I do with my clients or in group classes.
